Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Artesia

We install and replace asphalt shingle roofs from tear-off to ridge cap. Before work starts, you get a realistic start date and an arrival window for each work day. If weather or a material delivery moves the plan, we call you as soon as we know.

How shingle roofs work and which homes they suit

Each asphalt shingle starts as a fiberglass mat saturated with asphalt and surfaced with ceramic-coated granules. Those granules shield the asphalt from UV light, which is what wears it down. Architectural shingles bond two layers together, making them thicker and better at handling wind than the older three-tab kind.

Shingles work on most sloped roofs with a pitch of 4:12 or more, and many ranch and tract homes in Artesia, Cerritos and Bellflower were built with them in mind. They cost less and weigh much less than tile, and a damaged patch can be fixed without touching the rest. For a low-slope roof, see our flat roofing page for the systems made for it.

On a single-story home, most shingle jobs run one to three working days. We tell you where in that range your roof falls, and why, before you sign.

What our shingle installs include

Full tear-off to the deck

We strip the old shingles and underlayment down to the plywood or plank sheathing. That lets us see rot, delamination or loose boards. Laying new shingles over old ones hides those problems and adds weight to the framing.

Deck repair, priced in advance

We replace damaged sheathing with new plywood or OSB. Your written estimate lists a per-sheet price, so a soft spot never turns into an open-ended charge.

Underlayment and valley membrane

Synthetic underlayment covers the whole deck. We add self-adhered membrane in the valleys and around pipes and vents, where water concentrates during heavy rain.

New flashing and drip edge

We install new drip edge at the eaves and rakes, new step flashing where the roof meets a wall, and new pipe boots. Reused flashing is a common reason a new roof leaks in its first season.

Attic ventilation and ridge cap

We compare intake at the eaves with exhaust at the ridge and correct the balance. Steady airflow keeps summer attic heat from baking the shingles from underneath.

Signs your shingles are due for replacement

  • Granules in the gutters

Dark, sand-like grit piling up at the downspouts means the UV shield is wearing away. Bare asphalt dries out and cracks fast under strong Southern California sun.

  • Curling or cupping edges

Shingles that lift at the corners or dish in the middle have lost their flexibility. They catch wind, and rain gets pushed under the tabs.

  • Missing tabs across several slopes

One missing tab may only need roof repair. When tabs are missing across several slopes, the seal strips have usually failed over the whole roof.

  • Stains on ceilings or the attic deck

Water marks after a storm often trace back to a worn pipe boot or loose flashing. On an older roof they can also mean the underlayment has failed. Our roof leak repair page explains how we find the source.

  • A roof past 20 years

Many standard shingles wear out after about 20 years, and south- and west-facing slopes usually go first. Age alone is a good reason to have a roof inspection done.

A shingle roof job from first visit to final walk

  1. 1

Free inspection and a written estimate

We go over the roof, look in the attic and photograph our findings. The free written estimate spells out materials, the deck repair rate and the number of working days we expect.

  2. 2

    Permit pulled, start date set

We file the reroof permit and confirm whether California's energy code calls for a cool-rated shingle on your house. You then get a start date and an arrival window for the first day. If materials or weather change, you hear from us in advance, not that morning.

  3. 3

    Section-by-section tear-off

The crew removes one section, covers it with underlayment, then moves on, so the house is never open overnight. Any deck damage we uncover is shown to you in photos before it's replaced.

  4. 4

    Shingles, flashing and ridge cap

Shingles are nailed in the manufacturer's pattern, followed by flashing, vents and ridge cap. Once the roof is finished, the building inspector signs off.

  5. 5

    Cleanup and final walk-through

Landscaping stays under tarps during tear-off, and a magnetic sweeper goes over the driveway and yard each evening. On the final day we walk the property together and review the job photos.

What goes into the price of a shingle roof

Each shingle roof is priced from measurements we take up on the roof, never from a guess at the curb. The written estimate lists every line on its own, so you can follow where your money goes. Financing is available through Service Finance Company, subject to credit approval.

Roof area and pitch
Shingles and underlayment are sold by the area they cover, so we measure every roof plane and total them. Steeper slopes need harness anchors and roof jacks and slow the crew down, so labor rises with the pitch.
Older roofs hidden underneath
Some homes have an earlier roof still sitting below the current one. We raise a few shingles at the edge to count the layers, since each extra one means more stripping time and another dump trailer load.
Condition of the sheathing
The sheathing stays hidden until the old roof is off, so we give you a per-sheet price for it before work begins.
Product line and color
Architectural shingles run higher than three-tab. If the energy code requires a cool-rated color, the product line we use may change.
Openings and valleys
Chimneys, skylights, vents and valleys each need separate flashing work. A roof broken up by many of them takes more time than a plain gable.

Common questions about shingle roofs

Something not covered here? (562) 568-5069

Will my house sit open during the job?

No. We only tear off what we can cover with underlayment that same day, and the bare deck is dried in every evening, even when the shingles aren't on yet.

Can the new shingles go over the old roof?

Code may permit one overlay, but we advise a complete tear-off. Laying over hides damage in the deck, holds in heat and makes the next replacement harder. We'll give you a straight account of what we find on your roof.

What if rain is in the forecast on a scheduled day?

We won't open the roof when rain is expected. If the forecast changes, we phone you to move the date and give you the next realistic opening, so you're never left guessing.

Will you help with my insurance claim?

Yes. We work directly with your insurance claim, photographing and recording the damage, and we can be at your home when the adjuster comes. Coverage is up to the insurer. You'll find more on our storm damage repair page.
